The cornerstone of the gardening plan for my house requires boxwoods, lots of them, count’em 37 Boxwoods to frame my entire garden.

They run from my driveway, around the porch, right to the back fence. Also, in the back, they frame the Hydrangeas. So – Lots of Boxwoods. They look nice enough, and you can see them here:

Walmart has been selling them at $6/plant, so that’s where I’ve been buying mine. I’ve seen them just as cheap at Canadian Tire and elsewhere. Amazon sells them for $13. You can get them here:

I spent a considerable amount of time reviewing my house layout and devising garden designs, before I came to the conclusion that I didn’t know what I was doing. I did know what gardening was, and basic principles in design, but the fine art of know what plants go together, and why you plant speciman trees in certain places was beyond me.

Well, my brother (the non-gardener) gave me a great idea, which was to use “Humber Nurseries” as my landscaping experts. For $150, I made a plan of my house on graph paper, took it in, met the landscaper who then planned a garden for me. Not bad, I said, and booked an appoint. Humber nurseries is based out of Brampton, Ontario Canada, and can be found online here:

http://www.gardencentre.com/default.asp

I’m sure most large nurseries in every city offer this type of system. The Appointment was fruitful. The landscaper had been doing this for many, many years and knew exactly what to do. If I didn’t like one aspect of this exercise, it was that his idea’s of what a good garden was, was limited, and he wasn’t a good listener. He essentially looked at the map, and decided what to grow.

The end product is very nice and something I’m willing to build on. Let’s see how it looks when I’m done.

Before because I’m changing this whole house up. The house was made in 1988, so about 30 years old. In that time, the 2 owners before me, only put up 5 evergreen trees. That’s it. The rest of the house is pristine, untouched, virgin soil. I assume in the 30 years, the soil has aerated itself and is ready for a good gardening hit.

The house is grey brick, and contains 4 evergreens (in various stages of growth) on the front lawn. 2 of them are pine, and only one is healthy enough to sport heavy, large branches. There is also a Maple tree in the front, towering over 30-40 feet. It’s set in the middle of the lawn and looks quite nice.

The North side of the house is …well, dead really. It has no plants except weeds and is blocked from view by a large shrub.

There is a 4 foot concrete path that wends it’s way around the house. STarting at the driveway, it skirts the front porch, side of the house, then terminates at the back deck.
